Sustainability

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability has been embedded in our business since we first opened our doors in 1975.  Providing local employment, facilitating and supporting the use of the Irish language, and respecting the local environment and the talented craftspeople who work with us has always played a central role in the workshop’s story.

Supporting Local Artisans

All our pottery is made at the workshop by a team of skilled workers. This not only ensures the highest quality of craftsmanship but also supports the local economy and keeps traditional skills alive within our community.

CE4RT Program

We’re proud to be one of ten businesses onthe Dingle Peninsula selected to be part of the Circular Economy for RegenerativeTourism (CE4RT) programme delivered by Munster Technological University. Since early 2024 the programme has enabledus to implement a comprehensive sustainable action plan focused on measuringand reducing our energy consumption and ensuring our practices areenvironmentally responsible. Read about the CE4RT programme here.

Biodiversity and Tree Planting

Since 2020 we have planted over 1,500 native trees on our grounds, creating a thriving habitat for local wildlife and contributing to the health of our ecosystem. We are also committed to managing our grounds for biodiversity, with staggered mowing to accommodate local wildflowers and pollinating insects, and a pledge to use no chemicals.

Solar Energy

As part of the Dingle Peninsula Sustainable Energy Community program delivered by Dingle Hub in association with Fáilte Ireland, Kerry County Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta and Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, we have installed a 30KW solar panel system. This has significantly reduced our carbon footprint by providing us with a source of year-round sustainable energy. Find out more about the Dingle SEC programme here.

Community Engagement

Every year the workshop team actively participates in the county cleanup efforts, picking up litter along a 4KM stretch of road outside the pottery. This initiative not only helps to keep our local area clean but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Year-Round Employment

At Louis Mulcahy Pottery, we provide year-round employment for our staff, ensuring job security and stability for our skilled team. This commitment reflects our dedication to the well-being of our employees and the prosperity of our local community.

Recycling and Composting

We recycle all paper and plastic waste and compost all food waste, with segregated rubbish bins and a fortnightly waste collection.
